Putative restoration of a Philips B3X85U radio

The Philips B3X85U radio, a 1958 from Netherland, from an auction in 2012, was sitting on the shelf waiting for its restoration turn. I decided to pick it up this month (Mar, 2021) to perform the service. After taking the back cover, which also contorts the radio underneath, I noticed that it was in pristine conditions, only with some dust. I started to test all tubes and caps. All tubes were with excellent emission, but the magic-eye that was replaced with a NOS. Unbelievable, but all caps, including electrolytics, were within the tolerance range. One of the two philips 8089D lamps of 12 V and 0.1 A was burned and I ended up replacing them with two of 14.4 V and 0.1 A. However, it lasted little, one burned after about 4 hours turned on. They were replaced again with two 12 V and 0.15 A dial lamps. They turned weaker, but they did not burn after another afternoon turned on. At last, I only made a detailed cleaning and the radio is working as new.

Some collectors states to be the first transistorized short wave radio in the United States. It was a gift from Luiz when he came to Brasilia to attend the wedding of Phil and Carol, my niece. It has taken me a thorough cleaning to remove some oxidation from the aluminum chassis, some dirt from the age and the radio spoke like a new one.

This radio was purchased in September 2014 at Kutztown Radio Show, PA-USA. Manufactured by Emerson in 1938 and 1939, it is highly sought after and valued by collectors, as it is part of the Emersons with an Ingraham cabinet, usually with modern designs for the time. I've already bought it with the restored cabinet. There is still some electronic service. To see its technical characteristics and additional images, click on the photo below.
